Worldwide, thousands of parrots and other exotic avian species are cared for by bird sanctuaries. Although those sanctuaries rely on cash donations in order to continue their operations, they also have other needs. Here are a few ways you can help.
Work along with your local bird sanctuary, and with their permission, provide some of the following.
Donate Your Time:
- Help with bird-tending chores such as cage cleaning, disinfection of water and food bowls, and vacuuming feather dust.
- Tell your friends and family how they can help.
- Be an ambassador against parrot factories and pet-shop parrot sales.
Contribute Tangible Goods:
- Pet-store gift certificates
- Gift certificates to home-supply outlets and supermarkets
- Cages, toys, perches, play stands, etc. in good condition
- Travel cages
- Newspapers and paper towels
- Bird-safe cleaners and disinfectants
- Music DVDs you don’t want any longer
- Fresh fruits and vegetables
- Branches from fruit trees
- Pinecones
- Untreated wood
- Bath towels
- Office supplies
- Building supplies
- Garbage bags
Volunteer Your Creative Talents:
- Produce videos for sites such as YouTube or Vimeo.
- Write articles for the internet.
- Volunteer to speak at local schools.
Avian Services:
- Veterinarians can offer reduced rates or free services.
- Those with experience can clip wings and claws.
Fundraising Activities:
- Set up fundraisers and donate the proceeds.
- Donate the money you receive from recycle depots.
- Donate proceeds from handicrafts, books, and other artistic endeavors.
Foster Care:
- Give a loving home to birds while permanent rehoming is arranged.
Miscellaneous:
- Donate credit card points or rewards, including air miles.
- If you have a website, link to the sanctuary’s website and/or Facebook page.
- Spread the word via other social media.
Ask your sanctuary if they have other needs not mentioned above. Everyone can help.
